Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1985 when land and a historic lighthouse were transferred to the US Fish and Wildlife Service from the US Coast Guard. The ocean cliffs and open grassy slopes of an extinct volcano provide breeding grounds for native Hawaiian seabirds and nene, the endangered Hawaiian goose. Kilauea Point offers the opportunity, now unique on the main Hawaiian Islands, to view red-footed boobies, Laysan albatrosses, wedge-tailed shearwaters, and other seabirds in their natural habitat. The National Marine Sanctuary watters surrounding the refuge are home to Hawaiian monk seals, green turtles, and, in winter, humpback whales.
This video shows the parking lot and restroom area at the top of the Haleakala Crater. We were about 9500FT and I was totally feeling. SOme people respond differently to the heights but I don't do good since I grew up by sea level. So I was getting dizzy by the minute. Had to drink a lot of water as always and I manage to record some good videos. It was December when we got up there. Maui shore was 91 and we hit 34 up here. So it is a huge deal if youa re not ready for the cold up here. It was extremely windy and rain was not helping. I still got some good shots. Check my other videos also. I recorded bunch of on the way up and down videos that shows this challenging drive up here. We drove ourselves and this way we get to stop wherever and whenever we wanted to.
