Baby Swallow-tailed Nightjar (Uropsalis segmentata) in Peru






I found this little guy while nest searching in the Peruvian high andes (~2800m elevation). His mom was hanging around and flew into a nearby tree when I walked near him. He is quite developed and almost ready to fly on his own. After taking measurements of his wing, tarsus, tail and beak, I took this video and then left him where I found him. The bird was not harmed. Males of this species grow up to have spectacularly long tails... see a picture here: tinyurl.com
