"Some proponents of ridge line wind assert "we need it all", that is, all possible renewable energy development. This simplistic assertion does not withstand a careful consideration of the actual potential for wind generation in the Eastern US, or the potential and prospects for alternatives to wind power, or the potential negative consequences of ridge line wind development on both the environment and the progress of renewable energy development in general." -- Dr. Ben Luce Dr. Luce's formal training as a scientist, along with his work as alternative energy researcher, his love for the environment, and his experiences with legislation and public policy all work together to help him to bring a unique blend of science, economics, and practicality to his presentation. His talk will explore the small size of the onshore wind resource, the high cost of transmission, and the large environmental impact of ridge line wind. He will also discuss wiser alternative solutions such as solar which are based on analysis of the photovoltaics cost trend and large solar resource size in the northeast. Dr. Benjamin P. Luce is a professor of physics and chair of the Sustainability Studies Program at Lyndon State College in Northeastern Vermont. Dr. Luce received his BS in physics from the State University of New York at Fredonia in 1989, and his MS and Ph.D. in physics from Clarkson University in 1991 and 1993, respectively. A long-time advocate of renewable energy, including utility-scale ...
