Discover Oklahoma - Prairie Chickens at Selman Ranch

This ranch is well known for its longhorn cattle drives, held twice a year, but did you know it is a prime spot for bird watching in Oklahoma? It is one of the only places on earth where you can observe the mating rituals of the lesser prairie chicken, and thier performance is a sight to behold!

I had the honor to digiscope Greater Prairie Chickens (9 males and 6 females) on March 30, 2012. Along with my wife (Chrissy McClarren) and others, I was led to a blind by Scott Simpson (the site manager for almost 30 years) around 5:45AM in the morning. From there, we witnessed the booming and courting for 2 hours. Thank you, Scott. (And thanks to Mary Anne and David Marjamaa making sure there was space for me and Chrissy. Besides the Marjamaas, in the blind with us were Anne Fitzpatrick and Stephanie Schuppan. You'll hear their voices in the video.)
