Turning Energy Into Power More Efficiently

James Van de Ven, assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), heads the universitys Mechanical Energy and Power Systems laboratory, which conducts research on efficient energy conversion and storage. Among the projects underway there is the development of a power-dense liquid-piston Stirling engine with a high-speed on-off hydraulic valve, which could contribute to the realization of highly fuel efficient hydraulic hybrid vehicles.
