What do chickens eat? Hubert, an egg farmer in Oshawa, Ontario tells us
Okay, so what exactly do chickens eat? If you're a chicken at an Ontario egg farm, you'll probably eat a lot of corn, which is good source of energy, explains Hubert, an egg farmer from Oshawa, Ontario. Chickens who are fed corn also produce eggs with bright yellow yolks. Did you know that, pound for pound, a chicken needs to consume 10 times more protein than the average man? That's why Hubert also gives his hens protein in the form of soya meal. "So she has a balanced diet. If a chicken's healthy, she'll have lots of eggs," he says. In fact, a healthy chicken will lay an egg almost every day. Imagine that. Learn more about Hubert and other Ontario egg farmers at www.eggfarmersofontario.ca. Today, Hubert's got another team: his wife and three children. Together, they work and play on the farm. Their oldest child will soon be going to the University of Guelph to study environmental science. In addition to providing their eggs to grocery stores, Hubert, with his sister, runs the family's White Feather Country Store. "We have lots of customers, a lot of regulars," says Hubert. Producing eggs, says Hubert, is a privilege. "Even though we have our ups and downs in the farm community, the end result is we produce something for somebody else."
