Birders looking for Roseate Spoonbills will find Spoonbills in Kissimmee. This is my first video taken of a Roseate Spoonbill while birding in my Kissimmee neighborhood at sunrise. There were two Roseate Spoonbills in the tree, I focused on the one only. I struggled with the morning light as the Spoonbills were basically in the dark or back lit as the sun rose. The few trees in the retention pond were loaded with birds at sunset the evening prior. This morning the Roseate Spoonbills were among the last to leave the rookery. The rookery was quiet at 6 am but by 6 the birds started grunting, spreading their wings and taking their morning constitutions. The ibis outnumber the other species of birds in this rookery, and among the first to leave the safety of the rookery. The Roseate Spoonbills are very slow to move and took their time getting started. They reminded me of a serious coffee drinker waking only to discover the coffee was not yet brewed. There are 14 species of birds, not counting the songbirds, sharing this retention pond habitat as of the end of September 2010. Looking forward to seeing what migrating birds will appear in the next few months. Check back here soon for more Slough videos as the migrating birds arrive.
