In 2009, Steve Rattner, a private equity financier and co-founder of the Quadrangle Group, was selected to head the Obama administration's auto industry task force, where he oversaw a federal bailout and a rapid restructuring of GM and Chrysler in the midst of a severe economic downturn. The group, housed in the US Treasury Department, allocated TARP funds, approved by Congress to assist financial institutions, to restructure the ownership and assets of two major US automakers, while making taxpayers major shareholders in the process.
